For me - it's started
My bags are packed and straped. Tank is full. It's 102 degrees here in Modesto. I'm on my way to Monterey for the Forgotten Highway Expedition meetup.

It's so hot!
I just rode up I5 - what a frikin' blast furnace. I've stopped at Cruiser Customizings open house for some free food. Bought a new mesh jacket (not a black one) while I was there.

Crusin Monterey
When I got to Monterey I checked into my hotel - and then cruised the area. It's a beuatiful place. I watched the sun set - then had some dinner at a very popular pizza joint located downtown.

Waffle Shops can be lonely places
I arived at the Waffle shop to find poor Walt (Twodawgz) all alone, waiting for me. Sorry dude. We waited a bit, realizing we were gonna be it. Skipped the WS breakfast and headed to the Chevron - which turns out to be torn down. Kind of scary start.

The FHE Starts
We hope on the 101 and head north. I's pretty cold out. 60's at most with lots of mist.

Santa Cruz Hookup
We met up with a couple of friends of Walt's just outside of Santa Cruz. After a ltille talk a few miles of riding and then some fuel we split back up. Them south - us north.

Santa Cruz Coastline & Boardwalk
First scenic stop - Santa Cruz. Like this town.

Lunch in Half Moon Bay
A good if slightly expensive lunch right on the beach in Half Moon Bay
12:30 on 07/18/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
Into SF
It gets colder and more congested. You can see the mist blowing in off the ocean. Visibility is low. But SF is quaint as ever.
1:30 on 07/18/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
The Golden Gate
What Golden Gate Bridge? There is so much fog and mist - we can't even see the bridge from the GGB visitor center!! Peter (Raider Boy) joined up with us here.

On the north side of the GGB, it did a little clearing so we got a couple of pics.
15:00 on 07/18/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
Point Reyes
We stop into the Point Reyes National Seashore. A little talk and we decided to skip the light house - since it was socked in anyway.
16:30 on 07/18/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
Lost
Couldn't find the road the MS Streets & Trips claimed existed to take us right into Rohnert Park. So MS errors - 2 (missing Chevron and non existent road - bet there is more coming)
17:30 on 07/18/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
The group gets bigger
Pulling into motel 1, Goodnite Inn, We run into Dobie, Val, Debbie and Ian. Plans are made for a great dinner at a walking distance Outback restaraunt. Dobie & Val's daughter and her friend join us for an evening of food and some drink.

Off & running for the coast
Pat (Coachpk) join us this morning. We took of on time riding toward Bodega Bay and Hwy 1
10:30 on 07/19/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
Coastal Run
The costal Hwy 1 is a grewat road. Still misty and cold. But an awesome mix of twists, sweeps and straights. Most people are really cool and use turnout to let the group pass.

We stopped in Point Arena for fuel at a simple little private station.

Lunch
When hunger set in we raided a Perkos. We got a little worried cause Pat took a while to catch up. He thought we said stop in Mendocino - but we went on to Fort Bragg - he showed up.

More Hwy 1 Coastline then a turn inland
Hwy 1 just kept getting better. When we turned inland the mist cleared the air warmed - and the road into Leggett got frreakin' awesome!!!!!

Brad (Beerme) joined up in Leggett

A split
Most of the group chose to continue on with the scheduled ride on the Lost Coast Highway (211) even though it was getting late in the day. Two or three continued up the 101 to avoid it.

Lost Coast Highway
This place is so cool. Giant redwoods to start, deep narrow valleys led to the coast. A lonely breezy coastline that was awe inspiring. A giant steep hill lined with pasture land to finish the Lost Coast Highway. I definitely recommend this ride!!! (I'd do it in the opposite direction if I had the choice). The roads weren't great surface wise - but certainly good enough. They patched the asphalyt in a few places... with gravel :)

Ferndale - a Victorian village at the north end of Hwy 211 (Lost Coast). Cool place - we would have stopped but it was late and we were already going to finish in the dark.

Eureka
Got in late. Eureka is not very impressive. Maybe it will b beter in the morning.

Everything! is closed. We had to settle for Burger King for dinner.

Gettin the hell outa ... Eureka
I certainly don't recommend the Econolodge. But I don't really recommend Eureka either. Kind of a dumpy town with weirdness walking around everywhere. Glad to leave town.

The upside was we weher able to meet up with Chris (Magilla) for food and a short ride. He rode with us to Fortuna. We continued on to Hwy 36

Highway 36 - wooohoo!!!!!
Awesome piece of roadway. Beautiful weather made this long stretch of twisties and sweeps a spectacular ride!!! Good asphalt, no traffice, nice drivers.

Gas is a little sparse - so I'll mention it exists in Dinsmore and Mad River - in case you get this way.

Highways 36 / 3
Stopped at the junction of 36 & 3 - weird peice of asphalt there. Looks like an urban exchange.

Weaverville for a very late lunch
Half way up Hwy 3 - we finally ate at a bar & grill in one more tiny town.
15:00 on 07/20/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
Trinity Lake
Stopped to do some splashing in the water and cool down in hte building heat. I managed to stop us at a second dead deer carcus.
15:00 on 07/20/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
Hwy 3 to Gazelle
Upper part of 3 was pretty fun also. Lots of elevation changes just like Hwy 1, Hwy 36 and lower Hwy 3. Roller coaster fun.

It evened and mellowed out as we rode up Gazelle Rd to Gazelle. Mt. Shata appeared on our right. Impressive Mt. Gazelle is a tiny place where we made a quick stop.
15:00 on 07/20/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
The Hi & Lo in Weed
One more tiny little town. But... the Hi-Lo Motel and Cafe was an exceptional stop. I would recommend both. I found the food to be fabulous. And room was good too.

After a great evening meal, we gathered out back the motel on a grass park area with Mt. Shasta visible in the distance. Beerme (Brad) was kind enough to "beer us".

Bummer
Much to everyones dismay, Dobie & Val had to leave the ride this morning. Val hadn't been feeling well, and it finally got to be to much. We were sad to split up.
9:00 on 07/21/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
Hwy 89
Rollercoaster straights, long smooth sweeps and 65 MPH speed limits. Pretty cool
13:00 on 07/21/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
Hwy 299
Opened up in to flat high country. Lots of ag and fairly straight roads. The thunder clouds were chasing us. But we beat them to Alturas where we ate lunch
13:00 on 07/21/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
Termo - truely nowhere
We stopped in a tiny "place" called Termo. The meal caught up with us and we were sleep. I was like a little alien stop over. After a litle rest and local color, we moved on.

Termo Grasshopper Road. Even the signs were run down.
16:00 on 07/21/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
Eagle Lake
A quiet lake. No boats, no swimmers, no nothing. Just a lot of birds and sancturary.

The thunder clouds were still chasing us too.

Susanville - Town and Inn
Kind of cool little town. Bigger than I expected (we had our 3rd Black Bear meal here).

TheSusanville Inn had me worried. The outside looked pretty dumpy. But the rooms turned out to be pretty good. I got a comfy bed.

The last day begins
Ian took the lead for today. We headed up Hwy 36, back into the hills and mountains
11:30 on 07/22/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
Lassen Natioanl Park
This is one beuatiful place. Fabulous road with twists and sweeps and spectacular elevation changes. It varies from parctiaclly desert to dense forest. The summit and higher elevations still had snow to play in. The even have active geothermo stuff happening (you could smell the rotten eggs even riding by).

There were gorgeous lakes along the road - pretty small and some even still ice covered. If you can get to Lassen - do it!
13:30 on 07/22/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
Childs Meadow and the Cook
We stopped in Childs Meadow to eat. We pulled up and the sign said they closed at 2:30 (it was 2:40) until 4:00 for dinner. The cook, comes out and says "Lunch?" we say, "Yea". He says come on in.

He turns out to be quite the character. Made some good food and good banter. He got stuck feeding others that stopped in after us also. Great place to stop, with decent food too.
15:00 on 07/22/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
Another nap required
Once again the food took us to the tired zone. So we stopped for fuel and sleep in Greenville
17:30 on 07/22/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
End of the ride
We rode into Reno on the 395, through a bunch of construction. We arrived at the final motel exhausted.
18:30 on 07/22/2005 -- posted by: PokeyV65
But not to tired to gamble.
We finished up by walking to the Hilton Casino for a good Italian meal with one of the worst waiters of all time. Thena few of us spent an hour or so gambling. I'm a five dollar winner this trip!!!

Final goodbyes
We all got our tired butts up. After a continental breakfast in the motel lobby - we all said out final goodbyes. Sniff, sniff - it's over.

Ian and Deb hung at the pool, then Dobie and Val's. Brad went back to NV the day before. Walt cruised down the 395 to SoCal. Peter 80'd into Sacramento to visit his son before heat tripping back to the bay area. And I rode rode one more twisty pass (Hwy 108) before arriving back in the stiffling heat of Cali's Central Valley.
